The dangers of skipping dental appointments

The dangers of skipping the dentist due to financial pressures

Many people are skipping dental appointments due to current financial pressures, but this can lead to serious oral health problems, carrying an increased risk for additional costs in the future. At Prospect Street Dental Practice we're seeing an increasing number of patients delaying their routine dental check-up and ignoring treatment requirements until they are in pain. This is concerning as regular appointments are essential to maintaining the best oral health and avoiding any problems progressing into more complex issues.

The risks of missing dental check-ups

Missing dental appointments can have serious consequences on your oral health. Without regular visits to your local dentist and hygienist, plaque and tartar and build up in those hard to reach areas, leading to decay and gum disease. In addition, many oral health problems are asymptomatic, meaning they don't cause dental pain or discomfort until they reach an advanced stage.

Delaying treatment can also lead to more expensive and invasive procedures down the line. For example a small cavity that could be easily filled will eventually require a root canal treatment or even extraction, if left untreated.

At each dental examination, your dentist will also check for signs of mouth cancer in the cheeks, palate, tongue, gums and lips. According to the latest NHS figures, around 8,300 people are diagnosed with mouth cancer in the UK each year. That's about 1 in every 50 cancers diagnosed. If mouth cancer is diagnosed early, a complete cure is often possible in up to 9 in 10 cases using surgery alone, so regular check-ups with your dentist is key.

Tips for affordable dental care

Whilst the cost of dental care can be a barrier for many people at this time, there are some options to help spread the cost of your care, making it more affordable:

  • Dental plans - signing up to a dental plan will help spread the cost of your annual routine dental care and hygienist appointments across 12 months. Many plans also offer discount on any clinically required work for plan members. Ask your local Reading  dentist about the plans they offer.
  • Employee dental insurance/plans - review your employee benefits to make sure that your not missing out on any reduced rate plans that you may be eligible for through your employer.
  • Commit to a good home oral care regime - Ensure thorough cleaning with an electric toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for 2 minutes, twice a day, followed by mouth wash and flossing/interdental brushing, to keep any problems at bay.
  • Take advantage of preventative care - regularly check-ups and cleaning are essential for preventing costly dental problems down the line.

Fabulous service and Dentist

The staff are both highly competent and very personable

We have visited this dental practice several times now, and we are very happy that a friend recommended it to us. This time, we came as a whole family — our children had their routine check-ups, my wife had an appointment, and I needed treatment for a chipped front tooth. The dentist did an excellent job and repaired it to a very high standard. The whole team are true professionals, from the friendly and polite reception staff to the dentists themselves. Everything is very well organised, clean and welcoming, and we always feel that we are in good hands. The level of care and professionalism is genuinely excellent. We are very happy with our experience and would definitely recommend this practice to others. Keep up the great work!

I've been a patient there for many years and the staff are all friendly and professional and I feel well looked after.

My dentist listened to my concerns, explained clearly what he would do, did what he said he would while talking me through what was happening and then showed me the results and discussed options with me. I was then very pleasantly surprised with how much the whole thing cost. For an emergency appointment I thought it would cost the earth but it didn’t. I felt like they did right by me not trying to milk my vulnerability.

Jill found why I was suffering food packing because of a missing filling. She cleaned the area thoroughly and informed Peter who I will be sing next week to resolve the problem.

The service was excellent! The receptionist made every effort to get in touch with me, and although I missed a few calls, I was able to book the next available appointment for the following day. Great service from start to finish! I will definitely be recommending them to my friends and family.

I came to the practice for my mormal 6 monthly hygienist visit. Jill has always provided brilliant cleaning procedures. Jill now uses the more up to date guided biofolm therapy using dye to stain plaque and then removing the plaque with a warm water spray. This is a much more comfortable method for my sensitive teeth..

Jill did a great job as usual. I trust her implicitly and she has been keeping me out of dental trouble for more years now than either of us care to remember! Very competent and professional. And friendly with it.

Darragh was extremely thorough explaining to me and my daughter what would be happening at the appointment. He made her feel at ease and was very kind and helpful with the after care advice.

Dr Buckley is professional, skilled, friendly and thoughtful. He has treated my children on the NHS for a few years and I have been really impressed with his skill and approach. So when my old dentist left my previous practice (and was replaced with another dentist who seemed to be more interested in the hard sell than what was best for the patient) I had no hesitation in moving over to Prospect Street. Dr Buckley did a great job on replacing a cracked filling. Injections were painless and he explained everything carefully in advance. Furthermore, the work cost just one third of what the other dentist had been planning to charge me, some of which would have been for work which wasn’t necessary. I highly recommend Prospect Street practice.
